The American Ornithological Society (AOS), which is responsible for the official English-language names of birds in the Americas, has taken an attempt to bring that day closer. The group said on November 1 that it will eventually remove eponyms, or names given in honor of certain individuals. Eight or ten birds will be renamed next year by the group. The remaining 70–80 bird species in the United States and Canada that bear human names will be covered in later years. While many of these bird names originally belonged to esteemed colleagues and pioneers in the area, the practice of naming species after humans has evolved well beyond this original intent. Such names are frequently chosen by famous people nowadays; for example, there is a millipede named after Taylor Swift, a spider named after Bernie Sanders, and a wasp named after Brad Pitt.
